Christmas in July

Would you love to celebrate Christmas without all the fuss and bother which usually goes with December 25th? Then you are very warmly invited to join the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church congregation on Sunday July 28th at 10 am for a lively and colourful Christmas service with all the trimmings. There will be a Christmassy morning tea and children's fun and games to follow.

Welcome Window

After much planning the new stained glass Welcome Window has been installed in the foyer of the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church. This incorporates at its centre the small stained glass window of Jesus welcoming little children which was previously located in the Children's Chapel at our former church building in High Street Glen Iris. Created by Armadale Doors and Leadlighting, it is a lovely work of art. Please call in for a look.

Glen Iris Road Uniting Church Kindergarten is holding its annual open day for prospective families on Saturday May 18th between 10 am and 12 noon. Come along to meet the directors and look over the kindergarten which is at the rear of the Community Centre and next door to Glen Iris Primary School. There will also be a sausage sizzle.

Film discussion group

A small group of people meet at the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church Centre on the third Friday of each month to watch and discuss recently released mainstream films. If you want to see films you missed at the cinema and express your thoughts about them to others in a friendly low key setting, this could be the group for you. We begin at 10 am and finish around 12.30. If you wish, you can bring a sandwich to eat during the discusssion. Coffee and biscuits are always available. On Friday February 15th Rev Lisa Stewart's Induction Service will be held here at 200 Glen Iris Road, commencing at 7.30 pm and followed by supper. The Glen Iris Road Uniting Church congregation is absolutely delighted to welcome Lisa as our new minister and friend. We look forward with enthusiasm to commencing our journey with her along the Way and, in time, introducing her to the local community.

Well, the holidays are over and the new year at 200 Glen Iris Road is well underway. The kindergarten and the many programs held in the Centre are now up and running. We warmly welcome two new programs to the Centre family, Minitalia and Kundolini Yoga. A list of all programs can be viewed on this website.  Also, a big welcome back to the Ashburton Community Centre which will continue to find a home with us this year while their building works are in progress.

Thank you to the hundreds of people, big and small, from Glen Iris Primary School, the Kindergarten and the local community who contributed food, toys and money to our December Camcare collection. These were conveyed to Camcare Ashburton for distribution and undoubtedly brought some joy to many families enduring hard times.

We would love you to join us for worship at our 10 a.m. Advent services, and on Christmas Day. Sunday December 2nd, Advent 1, is a Eucharist Service. Sunday December 9th, Advent 2, is our Empty Christmas Tree service with gifts for children going to Camcare Ashburton for distribution. Sunday December 16th is the third Advent service and Sunday December 23rd, Advent 4, is called Carolling Christmas. Please note that on Tuesday, December 25th, our Christmas Day service begins at 9.30 a.m. Experience the joy and hope of Christmas this year!

Helping Camcare

Glen Iris Road Uniting Church is collecting donations of new Christmas gifts for children and teenagers for distribution by Camcare Ashburton to families in our neighbourhood who are struggling to cope. If you would like to provide for teenagers in particular, items such as balls and sports equipment, trendy t-shirts and underwear, and gift vouchers from any of the big stores would be much appreciated.  Please do not wrap gifts; attaching new rolls of wrapping paper would be helpful though. Cash donations direct to Camcare or through the church are also very acceptable and can be used by Camcare for targeted gifts. Items can be left in the Centre until Monday December 10th.

During the month of November the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church is collecting Christmassy foods and non-alcoholic drinks to make up into Christmas hampers for the clients of Prahran Mission. We would be most grateful for your help. Donations can be left in the hall foyer. Unfortunately we cannot accept perishable or fragile goods, or anything that needs refrigeration. Prahran Mission assists struggling families, people in need, and those experiencing homelessness, or living with a mental illness. For further information please contact us by phone or email.

Ashburton Community Centre

The Ashburton Community Centre is about to undergo a major rebuild which will take approximately fifteen months. Because of this, from the beginning of October, it will have its temporary office at the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church Centre in the room adjacent to the Undercroft roller door. This can be accessed from the car park on the lower level and signage will soon be in place. Some of the current programs and activities run by ACC will also find a home at 200 Glen Iris Road. We extend a very warm welcome to staff and participants and hope they will enjoy their time with us while they await their lovely new building in Ashburton.

If you would like to see and discuss the film 'Frost Nixon' you are very welcome to do so at the Centre on Friday August 17th,  beginning at 10 am. There is no charge. Tea and coffee will be provided. Bring your lunch if you wish. We will finish at 12.30 pm. As with all notices on the home page of our website, this is an open invitation to the local community. You do not have to attend church services to participate in any of our other activities.

The Uniting Church Historical Society has invited Prof. Geoffrey Blainey, Australia's leading historian, to speak at the Glen Iris Road Uniting Church Centre on Sunday 19th August at 2 pm. He will talk about significant events he considers have most shaped our belief, practices and church today, and introduce his book 'A Short History of Christianity' which was published by the Penguin Group in late 2011.

Trivia Fun Night

Contribute to your local community and demonstrate your knowledge to impress your friends - at Glen Iris Road Uniting Church & Community Centre, 200 Glen Iris Road, Glen Iris on Saturday 4th August at 7.30 pm. Proceeds raised will go to the future development of Samarinda Aged Services. The cost is $25. Cake, tea & coffee are provided but please bring your own beverages and nibbles. RSVPs are due by Wednesday 25th July on 9885 0062. The Uniting Church has donated the use of the hall to Samarinda Aged Services to hold this event.
